If you want to play games, you’ll be restricted to basic 2D titles as the new Core i3′s integrated graphics managed just 10fps in Call of Duty 4. However, the 15R can easily decode HD video, which can then be output to a larger screen via the HDMI port. External connectivity continues with a shared eSATA/USB port as well as two USB3 ports, so you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to attaching external storage. The USB ports are conveniently spread around the edges.

The 15R’s 15.6in screen is a good example, with an even and reasonably bright backlight. Our only complaint would be a slight yellow cast that dulls flesh tones and reds, but otherwise colours are strong and contrast is adequate. Its 1,366×768 resolution means Full HD movies will be scaled down but 720p movies can be displayed pixel-for-pixel. The glossy finish is very reflective, so you may need to adjust the screen’s tilt to avoid them; fortunately, vertical viewing angles are reasonable.

With better performance than the previous model, the Inspiron 15R is great value, so long as you don’t want to play 3D games. Its great selection of expansion ports, the same great build quality and the lower price mean it wins our Budget Buy award.
